What is your mindset?

Have you ever thought about your mindset? When it comes to learning and creating new habits for ourselves, mindset is crucial. Stanford University Professor Carol Dweck has done extensive research on the difference between having a “Growth Mindset” vs. having a “Fixed Mindset”. If you have a Growth Mindset you see mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve. You enjoy challenges and don’t expect things to be easy. You are more willing to take chances and seek personal growth and knowledge. You believe that your intelligence and skills aren’t fixed. You can improve and develop talents and learning through practice.

On the other hand, if you have a Fixed Mindset, you subscribe to the belief that you are either “naturally” good at something or you’re not. You view your intelligence as something you were born with, not something you can expand or grow. You give up on tasks that are challenging because you don’t see value in continuing to try something that isn’t immediately easy for you. You are content staying the same with minimal change.

Being aware of our mindset is valuable when we consider making changes for our health and wellness. Change is rarely linear, so understanding that it’s a process of learning what specifically works best for each of us takes flexibility and resilience.
